I think there are close enough parallels - both mediations and
reconstructions through experiment or neural processing. I don't really
care about the Zen aspects - that's not what I'm referring to at all.
The point is that, however you want to divide it, the division doesn't
hold - it is all 'real,' although qualitatively different from an
ontological viewpoint. To say world-x is 'virtual' within or against or in
relation to or as a subset or member of world-y is not only problematic;
it's a confusion. They are all real, all read, all mediated, all
structured.
One thing of interest to me still - years ago I was a member of a systems
group at Brown and one of the things examined was the flow of digital
streams within a computer - in fact, it turned out that the more complex
the computer (and at that time they were incredibly simple - this was
early 70s), the less the state of the machine at any time tn could be
determined. So the reality of the bits could only be inferred, and that
stochastically.
